1. What is lycopene?
Lycopene is a red-orange carotenoid, a plant pigment that gives tomatoes, watermelon, pink grapefruit, and some other foods their color. In everyday diets, tomatoes are the best-known source.
Carotenoids can build up in human skin. That does not turn them into a shield the way sunscreen works. Researchers think they may instead help skin handle oxidative stress — the chemical wear and tear that happens when ultraviolet light interacts with skin cells.
Tomatoes contain more than lycopene, too. Processed tomato products can provide phytoene, phytofluene, beta-carotene, tocopherols, and other compounds. That is one reason studies often test tomato paste, tomato extracts, or mixed tomato nutrient complexes rather than isolated lycopene alone.
2. How it may work in the skin
UV radiation can set off several changes in the skin at the same time. It can increase reactive oxygen species, which are unstable molecules that can damage cell structures. It can also raise inflammatory signals and switch on enzymes such as MMP-1, which helps break down collagen.
Collagen is one of the proteins that gives skin its structure. When UV exposure repeatedly turns up collagen-degrading pathways, it contributes to the visible pattern often called photoaging: rougher texture, uneven pigmentation, fine lines, and loss of elasticity.
The lycopene idea is biologically plausible because lycopene in human skin appears to be used up during UV exposure. In one mechanistic study, a single dose of solar-simulated light reduced lycopene levels in exposed skin more than beta-carotene. That suggests lycopene may be part of the skin’s antioxidant response. It does not prove that taking a supplement prevents damage, but it does help explain why researchers are interested in dietary oral photoprotection.
3. What the evidence says
The clearest signal comes from studies where people consumed tomato paste, tomato extracts, synthetic lycopene, or tomato nutrient complexes for several weeks before a controlled UV challenge. Researchers then measured redness, pigmentation, or molecular markers in the skin.
A recent systematic review and meta-analysis concluded that tomato and lycopene interventions can reduce UV-related redness, often measured as UV-induced erythema, and may improve some photoaging-related measures. It also found changes in markers such as MMP-1 and ICAM-1, both linked with UV-driven stress and inflammation.
Three points help keep the evidence useful without overstating it:
Gradual effect: Benefits appeared after weeks of intake, not after a single dose.
Food matrix: Tomato paste with oil may support absorption and skin marker changes.
Mixed results: Tomato complexes look promising, but capsule studies are not consistent.
The practical reading is straightforward: lycopene-rich interventions may make skin a little less reactive to controlled UV stress. They have not been shown to make sunbathing safe, reliably prevent sunburn, reverse sun damage, or replace topical sun protection.

4. Food, supplements, and timing
Processed tomato foods are a sensible place to start. Tomato paste, tomato sauce, and tomato soup often provide lycopene in a more absorbable form than raw tomatoes or some juices, especially when eaten with fat such as olive oil. Heat processing changes lycopene’s structure and can make it easier for the body to absorb.
Trial doses vary, so there is no agreed intake for skin health photoprotection. Many positive studies used roughly 10 to 16 mg lycopene per day, often for 10 to 12 weeks. That is a research pattern, not a guaranteed target.
Supplements can be convenient, but the label does not always tell the whole story. Some positive studies used proprietary tomato nutrient complexes containing lycopene plus other tomato compounds. That means the benefit cannot be pinned on lycopene alone. It also means a generic lycopene capsule may not act exactly like a mixed tomato extract or a tomato-rich meal.
If you are thinking about this as sun-season nutrition, think in weeks, not hours. The evidence points to slow accumulation and preventive resilience, not a quick pre-beach fix.
5. Safety
Tomato foods are safe for most people and fit easily into a varied diet. Reflux, tomato intolerance, or sensitivity to acidic foods may limit intake for some.
Lycopene supplements are usually well tolerated, but high intakes from foods or supplements can turn the skin orange, a harmless condition called lycopenodermia. EFSA has also set an acceptable daily intake of 0.5 mg per kilogram of body weight per day for lycopene in the food-additive context. That is a safety benchmark, not a recommended dose for skin.
It is also worth remembering how supplements are regulated. In the United States, dietary supplements are not approved by the FDA for safety and effectiveness before marketing. Product quality, dose, and ingredient combinations can vary.
Be cautious with supplements if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication, or managing a medical condition. And if you burn easily, have a history of skin cancer, or notice a changing mole, dietary carotenoids are not the right tool for that problem — speak with a qualified healthcare professional.
