How Do I Know If a Product Is Effective?
Supplement labels are designed to imply efficacy without making explicit claims that trigger regulatory scrutiny. Knowing how to evaluate what you're actually getting is an essential consumer skill.
A step-by-step approach

Identify the active ingredient(s)
Look past the product name and brand claims to the actual ingredient(s) — and their dosage per serving.

Cross-reference against clinical evidence
Use PubMed or our Supplement Facts library to check what dose trials used and what outcomes they measured.

Check the form of the ingredient
Magnesium glycinate vs. magnesium oxide. Methylfolate vs. folic acid. The form can change bioavailability significantly.

Look for third-party testing
This confirms the product contains what it says it does, at the labelled dose, without banned substances or contaminants.

Ignore marketing language
"Clinically studied," "professional formula," "premium grade" — these terms have no regulatory meaning. Ignore them.
The most common problem: underdosing
The single biggest reason a supplement "doesn't work" is that it never contained an effective dose to begin with. A product can legally list an ingredient on its label while including a fraction of the amount trials used — a practice sometimes called "fairy dusting." The label looks impressive; the dose is decorative.
This is why step two matters most: an ingredient is only as useful as its dose. A magnesium product delivering 50 mg does not do the job of the 200–400 mg used in most studies, regardless of how the bottle is marketed.
A quick worked example
Say a sleep product lists a "proprietary calm blend — 500 mg." You can't evaluate it, because the blend hides how much of each ingredient you're getting. Now compare a product listing "magnesium glycinate 300 mg" and "L-theanine 200 mg": both are named, both are dosed, both forms are well absorbed, and both amounts line up with the research. The second product is assessable — and that transparency is itself a quality signal.
